![]() Unfortunately, the romance was kind of where the book didn’t live up to my expectations. There were a lot of twists and turns that I wasn’t able to predict, and I definitely didn't see the end coming! (Now that I know what happened though, I feel like I should have guessed HAHA) Okay so the mystery in this book wasn’t the most complex by any means, but considering that this book had to fit so many different genres and that the romance had to develop alongside the mystery, I think it was well done. That being said, overall, I think the author achieved the vibes that she wanted, and I really wish I had read this in October. The reason I say almost is because sometimes it seemed like the author was trying too hard to fit the theme- the writing was almost abnormally lyrical at times (which was odd because the book was set in the contemporary world) and it kind of ruined the spookiness because I just found the lines so hilarious. This book almost nailed the gothic vibes for me, with the castle and the crows and the murders and all of the other spooky secrets that the school the MC attended held. I don’t read many gothic or dark academia books, so this was a super fun experience. I really hope we see more of them in the next book, because they all seem like they have way more to offer!īOOKMARKS, BLIND DATE WITH A BOOK ETC: USE MY CODE JAZ10 ❦. It felt like I was supposed to be convinced that Alessa and her Fonti became super close friends even though they literally started off being terrified/wary of her, but I felt like we didn’t see nearly enough of them for that to be the case. Unfortunately, most of them didn’t resonate with me that much. ![]() Something I did like a little less were the side characters. Alessa was such a fun protagonist, and despite being similar to some other grumpy love-interest characters, I appreciated Dante’s character too! What made them even better was their chemistry, their banter was top tier. ![]() The end fight was a little weaker, but overall the plot was super unique and I loved how much I learned about Italian culture and how the world-building subtly linked back to that too. I really liked it, especially the beginning. I loved Emily Thiede’s prose, and the way she structured this books stood out to me because of how great it was, particularly for a literal debut?! I went into this book with pretty high expectations because my friends who have read this book loved it (and I picked this up completely because of them) and what completely exceeded my expectation was the writing.
